An Arizona-based food, beverage and travel writer since 2008, I launched this website in 2015 to document my culinary adventures, beverage escapades, gardening endeavors, and travel in the Phoenix area and beyond. Also find a comprehensive calendar of Phoenix-area food and drink-related events on my Events page.
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Monday, January 8: Cucina Tagliani (Glendale). I spent the afternoon shopping with mom and we wrapped up our day at this family favorite (its scratch Italian menu has made Cucina Tagliani an Arizona institution for over 30 years). I usually get clams or spaghetti squash lasagna with Cucina Tagliani’s Dynamante pepperoncini sauce (photo on the left),but this time, I went for the baked spaghetti squash with Alfredo.
Tuesday, January 9:Arboleda (Scottsdale Quarter). I have three more spots to cross off for a cocktail assignment, and I always love a good excuse to visit Arboleda. Though I only had time for a cocktail this time, we have dinner reservations with friends in two weeks.
EVO (North Scottsdale). We’ve been to the original EVO in Old Town many times, but this was our first visit to the second location which opened in November.
Our quick meal (chicken piccata for me, chicken parm and Alfredo gnocchi for Ernesto) was so good, we made plans to return for a more leisurely dinner.
Wednesday, January 10: Citizen Public House (Old Town Scottsdale). This beloved restaurant known for its craft cocktails and sophisticated gastropub menu has been welcoming guests for over a decade. Our brief visit was a great reminder that we need to return more often - starting with dinner reservations next month.
Donabe (W Scottsdale). We were invited to check out Donabe when it first opened last year, but it took me until now to carve out some time. It was worth the wait! Donabe is a sophisticated Japanese steakhouse concept from Alliance Hospitality Group, who also own FLINT By Baltaire. We loved the cozy, sophisticated vibe, its tucked away location on the second floor WET Deck, the fantastic menu, and friendly service.
Once you find your way there, these are some of the dishes you should order: Kampachi sashimi with crispy potato threads, sliced jalapenos, and lemon-koji dressing…
… and Vietnamese Ribs with pickled banh mi vegetables; Lobster Roll with tobiko, Meyer lemon, and nasturtium leaves; specials like Ōra Kingsalmon with truffles, ricotta, and capers (listen to Chef Gilberto Torres’ full description here); his namesake Handlebar Roll with lobster tempura. asparagus, A5 Wagyu, wasabi aioli, and caviar; Wagyu Hot Stone with shiso chimichurri and daikon-onion relish; and one of the best burgers in town with ground Wagyu, black truffle mayo, and aged white cheddar cheese on a Japanese milk bun (and we learned a great tip from our fab server - swap out the haystack potatoes for the togarashi fries).
I was just as impressed with the beverage program, overseen by manager Randy Kuang: A Fuji Spritz for me (lychee, strawberry, Aperol yuzu, soda, and prosecco), a Japanese Old-Fashioned for Ernesto (Toki Japanese whiskey, orgeat, and toasted almond bitters), and the phenomenal off-menu nori cocktail below as a finale. Click the photo to watch my video, including Randy pouring us a beautiful Hakkaisan snow aged Junmai Daiginjo sake.
Check back on next week’s Rubee Tuesday for Festivin at Wrigley Mansion, a sneak peek at Uchi Scottsdale opening February 1, and visits to Pyro, Pretty Penny, and Anhelo.
Last week’s photo recap featured visits toThe Vig Park West, Christopher's at Wrigley Mansion, Pho Tan Thanh, and Casa Filipina.
I publish round-ups every Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Thursday, December 21:B&B Cocktail Lounge (Old Town Scottsdale). Researching for a Spritz cocktail assignment for Experience Scottsdale, I stopped by B&B to sample a couple of their newest cocktails. A fun (and delicious!) shareable carafe coming to the "Make it a Party" cocktail menu in January is the Snap Sparkle Spritz with Jaya prosecco, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, gold glitter, and guests' choice of citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime, or lemon).
I will also be featuring the Hi Barbie Spritz made with Chandon sparkling rosé and soda water mixed with Lillet Blanc, vodka, and fresh watermelon juice. We had just as much fun at dinner, starting with the Charcuterie Tower and then sharing a juicy grilled Argentine beef filet from WorldClass and award-winning Devesa Beef. Of course, I had to end with a nightcap from their acclaimed whiskey list - thank you to Bailey who introduced me to of her favorites (and now mine!): Leopold Bros. Three Chamber Rye.
Friday, December 22: Talavera (Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale). I hadn’t been to Talavera in (sadly) three years, and wow! I am loving this latest menu with Chef de Cuisine Emmanuel Urban and his team.
And thank you to Beverage Manager Dean Cabeza, who surprised me with a special Negroni!
It was great to see Dave Fernandez, who knew us from prior visits and guided us with menu suggestions, including a fantastic tableside bone marrow steak tartare by Chef Eddy. Other outstanding highlights included an amuse of chia seed cracker with sweet potato and kumquat; croquettes with jamón Ibérico de bellota; gambas al ajillo; duck breast with duck jus reduction and sweet potato mille-feuille; Talavera paella with lobster, prawns, pork belly, mussels, clams, chicken, and chorizo; chocolate ring with hazelnut and white truffle ice cream; and smoked cheesecake.
Saturday, December 23:The Italian Daughter (North Scottsdale) When Chef Vittorio told me about some of the seafood dishes on the special holiday menu (including his award-winning clam chowder!), we had to book a reservation.
And I’m so glad I did. It was an incredible feast, with clams oreganata, the aforementioned clam chowder (which was so good, we ordered more to-go), fried lobster tails, swordfish involtini, and lobster oreganata with spaghetti guazzetto.
We were also treated to GM Gino’s special flaming coffee, and a sneak peek at two tableside desserts planned for New Year’s Eve - espresso crème brûlée and tiramisu. Click the photo below to watch my video reel of our wonderful night.
Check back for next week’s Rubee Tuesday with visits to Global Ambassador, Hermosa Inn, and Ember at We-Ko-Pa Resort and Casino.
For last week’s recap of Sel, Kembara, Morning Would, Krazy Cajun Seafood & Hibachi, and Marcellino's Ristorante, click here.
I publish round-ups every Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Thursday, December 14:Sel (Old Town Scottsdale). Sel, a personal favorite (one that I featured in my Phoenix Cooks book), introduced a lunch menu this year for the first time.
Celebrating something special? Splurge on caviar and Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. A casual get-together with friends? Check out the Korean short rib buns, carnitas tacos, or Sel Burger. How about a foodie luncheon? I loved my Malpeque oyster stew with truffle-potato puree, smoked trout roe (lead photo above), duck confit poutine, and Old Bay tuile and miso-marinated fish and chips with Tokyo street fries and tomatillo remoulade.
Afterwards, I stopped in to two spots for a margarita assignment I’m working on - Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequilaand Prado at Omni at the Montelucia. Be on the look-out for my Experience Scottsdale feature.
Friday, December 14:Etta (Scottsdale Quarter). Our friend Matt Allen is now behind the stick in the dining room bar which opened up seating just a few weeks ago.
I first met Matt when he taught this cocktail class eight years ago, and I’ve been a huge fan of his cocktail skills ever since. Our evening started off with a Vieux Carre for my husband, and a fantastic Negroni for me with Campari, vermouth, rum, banana liqueur, and coffee beans.
To pair with Etta’s excellent cocktails, we dined on delicious House Foccacia with rosemary and black truffle-honey whipped ricotta; Bubbling Shrimp with ginger and cilantro; Wagyu Meatballs with Calabrian chile gremolata; and Cannoli Ice Cream Sandwiches.
Saturday, December 16:Kembara (JW Marriott Desert Ridge). I was so excited to introduce my parents to Chef Angelo Sosa and his new restaurant celebrating the flavors of Asia, especially since my mom is Vietnamese and we had lived in Thailand, where my brother was born.
Needless to say, they fell in love with both the restaurant and Chef Angelo himself (thank you Angelo for bringing mom into the kitchen - that was such a highlight for her!).
Don’t overlook the excellent craft cocktails named after books and Asian authors. Two favorites below: The Sympathizer (Akashi White Oak whisky, Genmaicha tea, toasted rice, and cherry wood smoke poured from a teapot) and The Joy Luck Club (a clarified punch with bourbon, rum, coconut milk, and yuzu).
Angelo chose some of his favorite dishes for us to try and what a feast! We all had different top three favorites (mine were the lamb spring rolls, chili crab, and rendang) but every dish was a winner. You can listen in to Angelo here describing some of the dishes.
Pictured below: Tuna Thai Jewel with ginger-coconut broth; chicken satay; noodles with pork belly and pea tendrils; fish head curry with lemongrass and coconut milk; chili crab with tamarind and sambal; green papaya salad; Wagyu beef rendang; Vietnamese Coffee Donuts and Thai tea shaved ice with pound cake and meringue; Vietnamese egg coffee and a Vietnamese Coffee Martini.
Sunday, December 17: Morning Would (Scottsdale). Course is one of my favorite restaurants, and I had been wanting to get to its “immature sibling” Morning Would for Sunday Brunch.
The party-sized Spritz XL set the tone for a fun morning with our friends Lisa, aka Cocktail Maven, and her husband Gregg.
Wednesday, December 20: Krazy Cajun Seafood & Hibachi (Phoenix). It’s alway fun to discover a new spot, especially when our friends Jason and Tawnya of CRUjiente Tacos introduce us to one of their favorites!
Thursday, December 21: Marcellino’s Ristorante (Old Town Scottsdale). I’m working on a Scottsdale Aperol Spritz round-up, so of course I had to include Marcellino’s, which celebrated 20 years in 2023. Bonus: Spending time chatting with owners Sima and Chef Marcellino Verzino.
We didn’t have time to have a full dinner but shared antipasti, Marcellino’s signature Polenta e Funghi (recipe is in my Phoenix Cooks cookbook!), and a fabulous special of grilled WorldClass calamari.
And thank you to Marcellino and Sima for sending us home with this generous gift! You can see what I did with Marcellino’s delicious sausage ragu here.
Check back on next week’s Rubee Tuesday for visits to B&B Cocktail Lounge, Talavera at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, and The Italian Daughter.
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Wednesday, October 11:The Mick Brasserie. The Mick is known for its fun and lively wine events, and a Taste of Argentina dinner sponsored by WorldClass was no exception.
This time, we traveled to South America with Catena Zapata wines and Chef de Cuisine Michael Winneker, who included award-winning WorldClass partners such as Devesa Argentine beef and FermínIberico pork. You can see more on my video reel by clicking the menu photo above.
Friday, October 13: Poppy’s Office (North Scottsdale). We were invited to a Friends & Family preview of Poppy's Office, a speakeasy ode to late hospitality entrepreneur Paul Keeler. What a loving tribute to this special man - concealed behind a bookcase, this cozy bar pays homage to Paul's private office, displaying personal mementos and his quotable "Poppyisms.” Click the photo below for my video Reel.
Saturday, October 14: Feeney’s (Phoenix). A family favorite with mom and dad for some of the best prime rib in town, old-school classics including Beef Wellington, and owner Maria’s Greek touches like flaming saganaki.
Monday, October 16: Back to Poppy’s Office to try more cocktails, this time for media night. For all the details of this hidden cocktail lounge next to Liberty Station Terravita, check out this press release.
Tuesday, October 17: JT Prime (Old Town Scottsdale). When our friend Chef Fidencio Alatriste of The Mexicano told me to pick a restaurant for our double date with his girlfriend Paulina, I knew just the spot. I’ve mentioned this hidden gem in previous Rubee Tuesdays, and it never disappoints.
In fact, we had such a fun time that we made plans to visit Fidencio at The Mexicano on Friday with Paulina and JT Prime GM Marcos and his wife.
Wednesday, October 18:Anhelo (downtown Phoenix). Anhelo is a favorite that I’ve written about in SOMM Journal, and featured as a guest host on A Taste of AZ podcast. On this visit, we were joined by Meridith May and Bill Brandel, owners and publishers of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines, who were just as impressed as we always are.
Thursday, October 19:CALA Alliance at Heritage Park in dowtown Phoenix. Thank you to our friend Gonzalo for inviting us to join him and his lovely wife for Sabor, CALA Alliance's annual benefit dinner and culinary event. It was a wonderful evening enjoying a Peruvian-inspired dining experience by Cloth & Flame.
Friday, October 20: The Mexicano (North Phoenix). As mentioned above, while at JT Prime, we made plans to gather once more, this time at The Mexicano where Fidencio chose some of his favorites, including killer new dishes:
Guacamole with crabmeat, crispy honey-chipotle chicken wings, chicken tinga and street corn empanadas, Sonoran Dog, chicken a la brasa, carnitas “osso buco style” and short rib con mole.
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Tuesday, September 12:The Canal Club (The Scott Resort). Our second dinner for Arizona Restaurant Week was the Cuban-inspired restaurant at The Scott. Three highlights from our delicious visit - ropa vieja tostones, chipotle-mango WorldClass Ibérico pork ribs with shaved Brussels sprouts and elote puree, and black bean dip with tostones (off the regular menu - you can find the recipe in my Phoenix Cooks book).
Thursday, September 14: Che Ah Chi at Enchantment Resort (Sedona). We were invited for a overnight stay and a special ZD wine dinner at Enchantment, a gorgeous resort with stunning red rock views. Stay tuned for my recap in the Travel section.
Saturday, September 16:The Market Restaurant + Bar (Phoenix). We closed out Arizona Restaurant Week out with a long overdue visit to this Phoenix gem. Not only does Jennifer Russo’s restaurant consistently offer one of the BEST Restaurant Week menus in town, but we were also spoiled with a tasting of the entire menu!
Monday, September 18: Virtù Honest Craft (Old Town Scottsdale). It was a perfect way to kick off the week when the Italian Association of Arizona gathered us together for a beautiful night of wine and food. Click the photo below to watch my video reel.
Tuesday, September 19:Persian Room (North Scottsdale). When I was assigned a “Travel the World” feature for Experience Scottsdale, I knew right away that one of the restaurants I would feature is Persian Room. Click the link to read about my favorite dishes like lamb koobideh and kash o'bademjan.
Wednesday, September 20:Rose Garden (downtown Phoenix). Back for another fun cocktail class led by Trey, this time paired with Chef Kam’s delicious bites of Khmer beef jerky, papaya salad, and shrimp rolls.
I had promised my husband that I would squeeze in a visit to Franco’s Italian Caffe this week, so after our class, it was off to one of our favorite Italian restaurants!
Thursday, September 21:Over Easy (Glendale). The Glendale location at 67th Avenue and Deer Valley celebrated their Grand Opening, and we have a new favorite neighborhood breakfast spot! You can read all the details of their 12th location HERE.
Three of our favorites on our first visit: Mimosa flight, Banana Nut French Toast, and Chicken Fried Steak with Potatoes O’Brien.
That night, we were invited by Rancho de los Caballeros resort in Wickenburg for a special night at Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion with guest Chef Jacob Ellis to kick off of their Celebrity Chef Ranch Weekends dinner series. The series kicks off on Nov 11 with Chef Beau MacMillan. Get all the details, including dates for Chefs James Porter, Lisa Dahl, and Christopher Gross HERE.
Check back on the next Rubee Tuesday for visits to Nogales and Tucson, Mora, Federal Grill, JT Prime, Cottonwood, Herb Box, an Omni Tempe staycation, and a CALA Alliance Peruvian dinner.
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Friday, August 25: Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room (Old Town Scottsdale). A Scottsdale City Lifestyle assignment on dishes using local honey brought me to one of my favorite chefs - Steve Zimmerman.
We were treated to an array of delicious dishes from this talented culinary star - some of which you can read about in the digital issue at this link (page 25), and others that were chalkboard specials.
And I was thrilled to be one of the first to try the new line of naturally-flavored Queen B sparkling meads (lavender, rose petal, jasmine, and bergamot)!
For dinner that night, we were off to Jade Palace (North Scottsdale). Locally-owned Tequila Corrido was the guest of honor at their first cocktail dinner featuring GM Roman Kettler’s excellent cocktails.
Sunday, August 27:Osteria Mia (North Phoenix). We had family visiting from Vegas, so we treated them to dinner at one of our neighborhood favorites.
Monday, August 28:Tia Carmen (JW Marriott Desert Ridge). The SOMM Journal gathered some of Arizona's finest wine and beverage professionals at Tia Carmen for a Gavi Masterclass. The first stop on the Gavi World Tour, it was a delicious deep dive into this Italian white varietal. Click on the photo below for a video, including the delicious spread that the chefs at Tia Carmen created.
Tuesday, August 29:The Rose Garden (Downtown Phoenix). We had a media sneak peek of the new Sur La Bar mixology class that officially launches September 20. For all the details, check out my video by clicking the photo of Trey Biven below:
Afterwards, we were off to celebrate Lauren Allen Culinary Events at their rebrand launch party at The Royal View House, a luxurious 8,600-square-foot home on a 1-acre estate. Coincidentally, I had been to this beautiful property before as it is the home of one of the co-founders of WorldClass, who now rents it out as a stunning venue.
Lauren Allen is known for her exceptional private dinners and events, and her launch party was another fabulous example. Congratulations Lauren!
Wednesday, August 30:Anhelo (downtown Phoenix). We’ve been back to Anhelo recently, but not for a full tasting menu experience. In fact, the last time we had made a reservation to do so, it was our anniversary last November and we had to cancel. We were blown away when we walked in and chef-owner Ivan had closed the restaurant just for us and created a special re-do Anniversary Dinner with this spectacular custom menu.
Needless to say, Anhelo, which has been a long-time favorite, now holds a special place in our hearts. Thank you to Ivan and his team for spoiling us with a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Monday, August 21:Arboleda (Scottsdale Quarter). Back to one of our favorites! This time, we stopped by for sherry and an array of tapas, including gambas píl píl, and of course, WorldClass
Wednesday, August 23:Cafe Monarch (Old Town Scottsdale). I had made special arrangements with Ben Wald, Executive Chef of both Cafe Monarch and Reserve, for a Scottsdale City Lifestyle Magazine assignment. Keep an eye out for the Food issue to see what he created!
That night, we had reservations at Ember at We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort (Fountain Hills). I was already a fan of sommelier Dennis Payne, Chef Richard Pelz, and the team when we recorded this Taste of AZ podcast, but during our chat, I learned about their sold-out wine dinners. Since then, we’ve tried to attend every one.
Ember recently received Wine Spectator Magazine’s Best of Award of Excellence for the third year in a row, so it’s no surprise that their wine dinners are outstanding. This time, they welcomed Frias Family Vineyard of Napa Valley and special guest Fernando Frias for an unforgettable evening celebrating these exceptional Napa wines.
Röllich’s first menu overhaul was for Fat Ox, and now he’s done the same at The Mission, where we had a chance to sample some of his stellar cocktails, including: A welcome mamajuana (rum infused with herbs, roots, and spices, red wine, and honey); Rio Naranja (tequila, coconut, ginger, lemongrass and yuzu), Diosa Verde (tequila, arugula and cucumber); Little Tree (vodka, passion fruit, sarsparilla and turmeric); Chicha Sour (Pisco and chicha morada, a Peruvian purple corn drink), Mission Martini (Panamanian rum, honey, cinnamon and espresso); and Archbishop (bourbon and mole orgeat).
Stay tuned for my Christiaan Röllich feature in the next issue of Tasting Panel magazine!
Since we were so close to Famiglia, we wrapped up our evening at this hidden secret. This Italian gem owned by the talented duo of Sommelier Broc Chavez and Executive Chef Richard Rangel is one of my top restaurant recommendations. While it might fly under the radar, Famiglia is the kind of place that deserves more buzz and popularity, thanks to its warm, comfortable vibe and sophisticated Italian menu.
Yet another fantastic meal - this time, beet salad with gorgonzola, candied pecans, apples, and citrus, Calabrian cappelletti with ricotta, eggplant, and brown butter, and garganelli with braised chicken, peas, mascarpone, and lemon sauce. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we made reservations to return in two weeks for Arizona Restaurant Week.
Check back on next week’s Rubee Tuesday for visits to Merkin, Jade Palace for a Tequila Corrido dinner, Sweet Republic, Anhelo, The Rose Garden, Tia Carmen, Osteria Mia, and a rebrand launch party for Lauren Allen Culinary Events.
A weekly feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Friday, July 21: Sugar Bowl (Old Town Scottsdale). One of my assignments brought us to this historic ice cream parlor and restaurant that opened in 1958. Loved the vibe (and strawberry malt and ice cream sundae). Our first visit, but we’ll be back!
Another assignment for the Scottsdale Visitors Guide was a great excuse to visit Richard Allison, beverage director at The House Brasserie (Old Town Scottsdale).
Wrapping up my Friday, we had a fun time (as always!) at Frasher’s Tavern. Thank you to chef-owner George Frasher, who had invited us to a special wine dinner where he cooked up some Rao-inspired dishes that he learned when they took over the Tavern for Super Bowl 2023.
Tuesday, July 25: TEXAZ Grill (Phoenix). We love this Phoenix institution, famous for its chicken fried steak, and need to come back more often. I also always order the fried okra, crispy jumbo shrimp, catfish, and peach pie a la mode.
Wednesday, July 26: I love when assignments bring to me see some of my favorite talents, like sommelier Nick Padua at Course (Scottsdale). You can also read about Course in my SOMM Journal column.
Our last stop was The Mick Brasserie, one of our favorite Scottsdale spots, not only for the fantastic food, but for the wine program (be sure to ask beverage director Jeff to suggest pairings). We also picked up the wines we had purchased at their Argentina wine dinner.
Recommended dishes from their new summer menu: Chef’s Caviar Preparation of the Day with WorldClass Polanco Siberian Reserve caviar, creme fraiche with gribiche (hard-boiled eggs, cornichons, chives, and capers) with pickled shallots and grilled brioche.
36-hour foccacia, chilled crab salad, and shrimp toast:
Check back on next week’s Rubee Tuesday as I visit Renata’s Hearth at Arizona Biltmore resort, Tia Carmen at JW Marriott Desert Ridge, Bitter & Twisted, Italian Daugher, and CRUjiente Tacos.
A weekly Tuesday feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can read past Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Thursday, June 15: Cafe Monarch (Old Town Scottsdale). It’s always nice to get together with John Bergman, co-founder of WorldClass, when he is in town, and on Thursday we were joined by Zane from his team and Eddie, GM at Prime at Gila River Casino Resort, for a spectacular dinner.
Some of the options from our four-course dinner with the Reserve wine pairing:
Shrimp ceviche with charred pineapple salpicon, avocado, and plantain chip
Sesame-crusted bigeye tuna with umeboshi tare sauce, compressed jicama, kimchi aioli, and crispy rice
Surf and turf with Wagyu and sea bass, root vegetables, fingerling potatoes, manchego butter, wild mushroom, and Bordelaise
Frutti di mare with ‘nduja and lemon crema
Friday, June 16:Hotel Valley Ho (Old Town Scottsdale). We were invited for a hosted staycation at one of our favorite resorts along with a weekend of special events.
After checking in, it was off to the OH Pool to meet up with media friends at our reserved cabana.
As part of the Hotel Valley Ho’s monthly Sip + Shop market series, James Beard award nominee Lindsay Autry of THE REGIONAL in West Palm Beach and Honeybelle at PGA National Resort was the celebrity guest for the weekend. Our media group had a chance to chat with Lindsay, a finalist on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” over cocktails and appetizers at a special meet-and-greet.
Afterwards, we dined at Zuzu on fantastic dishes such as steak frites with WorldClass Devesa ribeye from Argentina, chimichurri, peppercorn Foyot sauce, and garlic-parmesan fries; sugar snap pea pasta carbonara with pesto cream and toasted hazelnuts; lemon meringue pie.
On Saturday morning, we slept in before heading over to the hotel’s monthly indoor farmer’s market. When our summer heat means the outdoor farmers markets go on hiatus, the Hotel Valley Ho opens their doors to invite guests to shop local purveyors, wines and spirits to a free indoor market with live music (for more information and to register for July’s event with special guest Robert Irvine, visit this link)
As guest chef, Lindsay served her amazing tea-brined fried chicken and kale and green apple slaw. I’m ready to make a trip to Florida just to eat this again!
Wine and spirits were poured (I visited Tequila Corrido and DAOU Vineyards in between bites) and it was nice to see so many familiar faces, like MJ Coe and James Porter of Breadworks, Chris Schlattman of Better Events Management private chef service (soon to open a restaurant!), Brent Kille of Sonoran Pasta Co, Jason Raducha of Noble Bread, and Rachel Benkowski with Bone Haus Brewing.
That night, we gathered at Hotel Valley Ho’s Sands venue for Chef Lindsay’s cooking demo and delicious three-course dinner paired with DAOU Vineyards. We began with a welcome cocktail with Tequila Corrido, and chimichurri salt rim paired with passed bites such as oysters and fried green tomatoes.
Our mouthwatering feast paired with DAOU wines included seafood gumbo with sausage and fried okra, WorldClass Devesa Argentine ribeye with shishito peppers, Swiss chard, and short rib raviolo, and Atlantic Beach pie with lemon curd and candied Honeybell oranges.
As one of the sponsors, John Bergman, founder of WorldClass, spoke to the crowd about its mission to “Discover Hidden Treasures” and introduce them to chefs and diners.
Before checking out the next day, we returned to Zuzu for brunch, which is offered daily from 10 am to 2 pm. For me, a Purple People Eater and strawberry cheesecake French toast, and for my husband the Hot Chicken sandwich. Thank you to the Hotel Valley Ho for another wonderful stay!
Check back on my next Rubee Tuesday for our Hermosa Inn staycation with Cool Dining in the Cellar and a visit to one of my favorite cocktail lounges, Little Rituals.
A weekly Tuesday feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can readpast Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Thursday, April 13: Fabio on Fire, Peoria. Katie Roeis the founder of Upper West Side PHX, so when we decided to get together for a double date, this mutual favorite on our side of the valley was an easy choice. We started with an off-menu special of the BEST calzone I’ve ever had, stuffed with cheese, onion, and porchetta (thank you Fabio!).
Recommended dish(es): Pasta special with sausage and porcini mushrooms, lobster ravioli, affogato, and homemade gelato.
The perfect ending was cream limoncello. Grazie Fabio!
Friday, April 14: Sottise, downtown Phoenix. Sottise had been on my must-visit list for quite a while, and I’m in love! Fantastic food, wonderful cocktails, friendly service, and a great wine list. Plus fabulous company with our friends TJ and Jenna.
I can’t think of a prettier downtown spot than its location in the historic Knipe House, built in 1901.
Recommended dish(es): Sottise Tower (Moondancer oysters, plain and with steak tartare, shrimp, boquerones, trout roe, creme fraiche, truffle potato chips, caviar, hiramasa, crab salad and octopus conserva); onion soup; cacio e pepe pasta with escargot, a “secret” menu item not listed, but always available; apple tart. And we were just as impressed with Lucas’ craft cocktails - I loved my Évasion, a clarified cocktail with tequila reposado, toasted buckwheat, and persimmon.
Tuesday,April 18: Staycation at Westin Tempe. We kicked off another great stay at our favorite Tempe hotel recording a Taste of AZ podcast with executive chef Mario Ventura and mixologist Nicole Robinson-Sanchez.
Of course, we had to head upstairs for sunset cockails on the Valley's highest open-air rooftop bar - Skysill. You can see more of this beautiful lounge and our stay in my video Reel.
We ended a perfect day with dinner at Terra Tempe to explore the newest menu from Chef Mario. Recommended dish(es): Charred baby corn withchipotle aioli and cotija cheese; Potato Frito Misto with potato bravas croquettes, calamari, chorizo, and chipotle aioli; Terra's Hot Stone with Westholme Wagyu beef, cherry vinaigrette, cranberry pistachio biscotti, and tart cherry gelee; Sonoran Chicken Tortilla Soup; pea and ricotta ravioli with asparagus; filet with purple pomme purée, king mushrooms, and guajillo demi-glace; Arroz Negro with forbidden rice, maine lobster, jumbo shrimp, mussels, calamari, crab, chorizo, and saffron aioli.
Wednesday, April 19: Media Tour at Epicenter at Agritopia, Gilbert. Epicenter is a new vertical mixed-use community with 320 apartments, popular Arizona bars, restaurants and retail spots. I will be spotlighting Epicenter’s food and beverage offerings and founder Joe Johnston in a four-page feature for SOMM Journal, but you can see a Reel of our fun-filled day HERE.
We started off at Chef Claudio Urcioli’s Source, a restaurant (soups, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, grain bowls) and shop (wine, bread, olive oils, and pantry items).
Then it was off to tour some of the many things Epicenter offers: Vintage Home, Peixoto Coffee Roasters, Wylde Salon, Barre3, The Tyler apartments, Beer Barn, UrbAna, and Bunky Boutique.
Our afternoon ended at Belly with cocktails (Spicy Hydra with tequila, pineapple, Thai chili, and cucumber, and Rosé Sangria with passionfruit and lemongrass) and a feast of green papaya salad, spring rolls, fried rice, and crispy white fish. For more, see my Reel HERE.
Thursday, April 20: Argentina wine dinner at ZuZu at the Hotel Valley Ho. I’ve attended many of the special dinners hosted by Executive Chef Russell LaCasce, and this one ranked as one of my favorites, celebrating the culture of Chef de Cuisine Alejo Candia and Pastry Chef Maria Arenas, who met in Argentina. The main event was asado, tri-tip and Argentine ribeye and skirt steak grilled on a beautiful parilla that was donated by WorldClass.
We were greeted with Argentina’s national drink, Fernet con Coca, before being spoiled with this delicous menu.
A short walk to The House Brasserie to visit Bar Director Richard Allison for a nightcap(s) was a perfect finale.
Check back for next week’s Rubee Tuesday for photos of Angry Crab, Foodist Awards, and Hearth ‘61 at Mountain Shadows resort.
And follow along on my Instagram for this week’s visits to Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey, Arboleda for a podcast, Mora Italian, and Tia Carmen for a special one year anniversary menu.
A weekly Tuesday feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can readpast Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Monday, March 27: Mariscos Playa Hermosa (Phoenix). After a fun time as a guest on In the Green Room chatting about food and wine, we visited this local favorite for Mexican seafood (they just celebrated 21 years). Recommended dish(s): If you can handle some habanero heat, order the agua chile tostada trio with black red, and mango-habanero salsas.
Wednesday, March 29: Back to Arboleda (first recap HERE). This time we returned as a hosted media visit (look for my upcoming A Taste of AZ podcast and article) and had even more fun chatting with executive chef Evan and chef Scott, owners Mitch and Bjorn, and beverage director Brandi - thank you for the excellent wine pairings! You can see more on my video Reel HERE.
Recommended dish(s): WorldClass octopus with cucumber and salsa macha, hummus and baba ganoush, hamachi with carrot purée and chili garlic crunch, patatas bravas with smoked pimentón espuma, gambas píl píl, and Argentine ribeye with Calabrian chili butter.
Friday, March 31: Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse (Carefree). We were celebrating my parents’ 59th wedding anniversary and when dad requested prime rib, I knew exactly where we would take them! I’m a huge fan of the Keelers and their restaurants (they also own Liberty Station Tavern), and Keeler’s has been on my “bring mom and dad” list for far too long.
Thank you to Chef Anthony and Christian, Matt, Ryan, Michael and Steve for spoiling us. My parents loved it, as we knew they would - dad said “this is my kind of place” and mom has requested that we go once a month! Recommended dish(s): New England clam chowder, ahi poke, shrimp scampi, and, of course, prime rib.
Saturday, March 31: First & Last (downtown Phoenix). I was long overdue for a visit to one of my favorite downtown spots. You can learn more about First & Last in my A Taste of AZ interview with owners Robb and Ashley Hammond.
Recommended dish(s): Butter braised leeks with Bearnaise sauce, oysters with Bloody Mary mignonette, crab with brown butter and fermented garlic, grilled Thai carrots with fermented cucumber and ginger-lime vinaigrette, cacio e pepe with Sonoran Pasta bucatini, and rotisserie porchetta with spoonbread.
TIP: They have a great wine and cocktail list too - our drinks pictured below were an Old Fashioned and Vicar in a Tutu (Laird’s apple brandy, tequila, Amaro Nonino, tawny port, lemon and lavender). You can also see a video Reel HERE.
And don’t miss their new Italian-inspired amari bar downstairs, called Little Debbie’s. As old Italian movies play in the background, you can enjoy amari samplers, cocktails and snacks - I loved the lavender Marcona almonds and the buttery clam conserva served with crackers. Recommended cocktails: La Vie en Rose (Braulio, Forthaven Red aperitivo, cava and lime), Heavy Petting (Ford’s gin, cassis, Carpano Antica vermouth, Fernet Branca and lemon), and Culture Club (Rucolino, Montenegro, St. George spiced pear and pineapple rum).
Little Debbie’s is open 6 pm to midnight Thursday through Saturday, and be sure to ask John for his cocktail and amaro suggestions!
A weekly Tuesday feature, I publish Rubee Tuesday as a photo recap of my recent drinking and dining adventures. You can readpast Rubee Tuesdays HERE.
Tuesday, March 21:Vecina (Phoenix). If we lived closer, we would be regulars at Vecina. I’m always so impressed with the uniquely creative dishes here (not to mention the excellent craft cocktails). On Tuesday, we stopped in for drinks and a quick bite, but couldn’t say no to guacamole, chicken karaage with aji amarillo, citrus gastrique, and togarashi, and what is now one of my favorite octopus dishes in town - WorldClass grilled Spanish octopus and mole rojo with white beans and aji verde.
I was also treated to a preview of one of the best dishes I have ever had at Vecina! Tacos Árabes are now being served daily as a limited special, so get there while you can for this fantastic WorldClass Cinco Jotas acorn-fed Ibérico pork and chipotle crema on flatbread garnished with pickled onions, almond dukkah and micro cilantro.
Our next stop was ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho in Old Town Scottsdale. I love introducing Meridith May (editor and owner of SOMM Journal and Tasting Panel magazines) to my favorite spots since her move from LA. After a feast that included potato pavé topped with Argentine steak tartare and WorldClass caviar, roasted garlic hummus, lobster mac and cheese, glazed Japanese eggplant, and Argentine steak (filet and ribeye), what was her verdict? “The best meal! Chef Lacasce is a genius.”
And speaking of Argentine beef, I have my reservations to a special Argentina Dinner at ZuZu on April 20. Get alll the details, including menu, at THIS LINK.
To learn more about executive chef Russell LaCasce, listen in on our A Taste of AZ podcast on Apple Podcasts, or watch it on YouTube by clicking the photo below.
Wednesday, March 22: I had another double-header the next day, first stopping at Pa’La Downtown for a great interview with chef-owner Jason Alford and general manager Gilles Kolakowski. Look for my column in the June issue of SOMM Journal.
Afterwards, I took advantage of the beautiful weather to finally check out Eden Bar, the rooftop lounge at Kimpton Hotel Palomar, and experience beverage director Clint Spotleson’s fantastic craft cocktails (like the Phoenix Rising below). Read all about it HERE, and see more on my video Reel.
Dinner downstairs at Blue Hound Kitchen and Bar: I first met executive chef Alex Robinson at Royal Palms, and executive sous chef Michael Press at Tanzy, and I have been fans of both talents ever since.
Needless, to say, we enjoyed another stellar visit (here is my last one), with highlights including pao de queijo cheese rolls and espelette butter, crab and yellow tomato chowder, Wagyu with house chili crisp and WorldClass caviar, cilantro-crusted WorldClass sea bass with smoked tomato romesco, and Argentine ribeye. I also made a video Reel here.
Thursday, March 23: Anhelo Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner. Chef-owner Ivan Jacobo has always made giving back to the community a priority (look for a future website interview!). On Thursday, he launched the Anhelo Restaurant Scholarship Foundation by hosting a wine dinner to raise funds for scholarships to the Culinary Arts program at Estrella Mountain Community College. Check out my Reel here for a recap of our amazing seven-course dinner.
I first discovered the gem that is Sel on a lovely afternoon while strolling the Scottsdale ArtWalk in Old Town Scottsdale. This weekly Thursday event celebrates artists and galleries, and its Main Street path brings visitors past Sel, located in a former gallery in Plaza Garcia. On that warm July day, Sel's pretty location and patio with cooling misters beckoned us in to enjoy a break from the heat.
We pulled up stools at the sleek bar and were immediately welcomed by friendly bartender Josh at whose hands excellent, well-crafted cocktails were imbibed. My husband ordered a classic Manhattan, while I opted for the Cerise Fumée with Vida mezcal, Ancho Reyes Chili Liqueur, black cherry puree and lime, garnished with a smoked sea salt rim and amarena cherry.
Sel offers a four-course prix-fixe, but dishes can also be ordered a la carte. Since we were stopping in for just a cocktail and a bite, we shared and savored two superlative summer dishes: A vibrant yellow tomato gazpacho adorned with avocado-lime gelée, peach granité, tarragon oil drizzle, and a light and crispy squash blossom stuffed with mesquite-smoked lobster and partnered with creamy roasted corn puree, micro greens and a pickled bing cherry.
We left happy and thrilled to find such a special spot, vowing to return to experience a full dinner. We were so impressed, that I included Sel in my article on ArtWalk dining stops for the Scottsdale Visitors Guide.
It might have taken longer than planned, but last month we finally returned to experience the full tasting menu and wine pairings. Sel is a beautiful, intimate restaurant seating 50 people inside and 50 more on the patio. It's a modern, elegant space flanked by a 10-seat bar and tufted purple chenille banquettes. Accents include crystal chandeliers and a glowing quartz bartop, with whimsical touches such as the imbedded salt shakers in the restroom walls.
Sel is the creation of co-owners Executive Chef Branden Levine and his wife May, who runs the front of the house as the restaurant's manager. Acclaimed for his prix fixe menu as previous Executive Chef at Cafe Monarch, Chef Branden has brought his talent for sophisticated and creative dishes to Sel. He has also brought his years of experience, which include graduating from the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales, time spent in Las Vegas working for Charlie Palmer at Aureole, chef positions in Tanzania, Africa, Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, DC, and five years as owner of a successful restaurant in Heathsville, Virginia. He has also made his mark on the national arena with TV appearances on “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell." Most recently, Chef Branden Levine and his team won the Chef's Classic Final Four, airing on CBS during the Final Four on April 2, 2017. Congratulations Chef!
It's thus no surprise that our dinner turned out to be a wonderful, memorable experience.
The prix fixe four-course menu is offered at $80 per person, including a vegetarian menu at $60, and optional wine pairings at $60. Dishes are also available to order a la carte or as supplements. Diners can choose between two items each for the first and second courses, and six entrees. Taking advantage of seasonal ingredients and Chef's creativity, the menu changes every three weeks.
Pre-dinner cocktails included a Manhattan and a perfect Negroni, my favorite cocktail.
My wonderful repast began with pristine East Coast Blue Point oysters embellished with bird chile mignonette and the herbaceous-anise accent of Thai basil oil. I also sneaked a bite (or two) of my husband's airy smoked goat cheese mousse topped with a rich wild mushroom ragout studded with the textural bites of Le Puy lentils and millet, and finished with black truffle-lemon emulsion.
Next was one of my favorite dishes of the night - delicate ravioli stuffed with tender rabbit confit and Red Kuri squash graced with smoked ginger butter, yuzu vinaigrette, and a shower of grated chocolate. A close second was my husband's bowl of verdant asparagus puree gilded with pops of tobiko and sweet red king crabmeat brightened with preserved lemon.
Each prix fixe menu includes a third course of the salad du jour and on our evening it featured farm-fresh winter greens complemented by roasted Chiogga beets, dried strawberry chips, molasses and applewood bacon, tossed with smoked anchovy dressing and garnished with a parmesan tuile and cheese profiterole.
Main courses brought a fabulous orange and anise-lacquered duck cleverly adorned with duck skin cooked into crispy "chicharrones" on a bed of velvety salsify puree accompanied by sauteed Swiss chard and roasted sunchokes, and enhanced with a burgundy wine-duck stock reduction. Special thanks to our knowledgeable server Michael, who expertly paired my dish with a Damilano Barbera.
My husband likewise raved about his sophisticated surf and turf which arrived as juicy sliced Lone Mountain Wagyu hanger steak with Lyonnaise potato pavé, crispy rice flour tempura asparagus, Banyuls reduction and a 6-oz black-truffle poached lobster tail supplement.
We almost decided against dessert, but were glad we listened to Michael. You don't want to miss the decadent strawberry shortcake layered with irresistible marzipan almond cake, Chantilly crème, and fleur de sel caramel, topped with a balsamic drizzle and vanilla bean gelato. I also finished with another expert cocktail by Josh using his housemade green-tea infused Old Tom gin (tip: be sure to ask Josh if he is working on any off-menu cocktails).
Our second (but not our last) visit reinforced everything we love about this Scottsdale jewel. In fact, we have plans to return with friends next month. Tune in this Sunday during the NCAA Final Four broadcast on CBS to learn more about Chef Branden's Final Four Chef's Classic win.
I was hosted by Sel and my dinner was complimentary
