Dos Cabezas Pink – Love Bottled Inside and Out
I fell in love with rosés 12 years ago one summer at The Wine Bottega in Boston’s North End. The afternoon wine tasting led by Peter Nelson was a revelatory introduction to the various styles and varietals. In Arizona, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by acres of vineyards and wineries that have embraced “the pink.” Here in the Valley of the Sun, rosés are not simply a summer season wine, but can, and should, be enjoyed all year round. Whether sipped on their own or paired with a myriad of dishes, their beauty ranges from hues of rosy spun gold to deep garnet red. Family-owned and operated Dos Cabezas WineWorks’ Pink, with its bright acidity and mellow tannins, is a glowing example of a wonderful rosé.
I met Todd and Kelly Bostock of Dos Cabezas within months of my move from Boston. Attending a locavore dinner at Tapino, I was impressed with these new-to-me Arizona wines, including the 2006 Pink. Just after the harvest of 2006, the couple purchased the winery with the help of Kelly’s parents Frank and Paula and moved it to Sonoita, where the Bostocks opened a tasting room. Currently, they have defined blocks in the Cimarron Vineyard specifically dedicated to the production of their rosé. While most are familiar with the love and care poured into each bottle of wine the Bostocks produce, one can’t help but notice that that same thoughtfulness adorns the outside of a bottle of Pink.
It’s a story as lovely as the label. Leonard Bianco, father of Marco and Chris (of Trattoria, Pane and Pizzeria Bianco) is a well-known artist, as is his wife, and beautiful pieces decorate the walls of the Bianco restaurants. One afternoon at the Pizzeria, the Bostocks’ attention was drawn to a loving canvas Leo had painted for his new bride Francesca. Chris took it down and generously suggested that the Bostocks use it for a rosé label. Needless to say, the heartfelt offer was accepted, and this gorgeous image now graces every bottle of Pink. In turn, Leo receives a case of “his” wine every year as a thank-you for the use of the painting. As Todd Bostock points out, “the label says more than words about what is inside the bottle.”
